Can Dialectics Break Bricks?

Here's an excerpt from Rene Vienet's 1973 film Can Dialectics Breaks Bricks?

Vienet's film is a reedited version of Doo Kwang Gee's "The Crush", overdubbed with new satirical dialog.

The dialog centers on a proletariat who has to choose revolutionary violence, over reformist nonviolence to end his alienation, and the abuses of state power.

Screen Test

Untitled Scene

Interior /Gun Shop: (Untitled Scene)

Clerk)
This is a Walther LP3 177 cailber single action hand pump gun.
It loads in pellet at a time .
It shoots accurately for 50 ft.
It’s the most powerful dart gun we have,
You can use it to administer tranquillizers. Ketamine, GHB, Nembutal, whatever you want.

Detective) Good.

Clerk)
(speaking slowly and deliberately) Now, you got to hold this baby with both hands.
Let her down slow and steady ….

You got to squeeze the trigger…. Don’t jerk it…. cause if you jerk it… it won’t work.

The Clerk hands the gun to the detective

Detective) (Speaking as if to imitate the clerk and slowly training the gun on a target.)
You got to hold the baby with both hands.
Let her down slow and steady ….
You got to squeeze the trigger…. Don’t jerk it….. cause if you jerk it… it won’t work.

The Alien Bong

Running Time Aprox. :40 sec

Blackness, sound of bong rip, fade in:

Stoned Woman in Red)
Do you think Baudelaire ever wrote about extra terrestrials?

Stoned Woman in White
) (annoyed) Charles Baudelaire didn’t write about aliens.

Stoned Woman in Red)
I know, but he smoked hash, I think he should have tried smoking through an Alien Bong,

Stoned Woman Behind Couch)I guess………maybe…….

maybe he might not have found hashish as ‘troubling’.

or such a ‘chaotic demon’ if he had smoked it through an alien bong.

(get's up and goes to window...continues talking)

I think that by placing an absolutely alien object at the center…

where you actually consume the hash….

That would have tempered the suspension of his smoking and knowing subject.

Stoned Woman in Red)
His alienated self would have a external substitute … in his field of vision.

Stoned Woman in White)
(annoyed) well I don't know..... I never had that problem.

The Accusatory Mind

Running Time Approx. 2:45

A woman walks across an overpass to meet a man sitting alone on a bench, he stands, they embrace.

Woman) I'm Sorry... I... I'm sorry Im late.
I thought you said the north side this is the south side.

Detective)I'm sorry I'm not thinking too well.

Woman) what's with the suit?

Detective)
I borrowed it...are you sure nobody followed you?

Woman) I don't know...

they begin to walk...and continue talking...

Detective)
Did you bring the car?

Woman) Yeah here are the keys, it's a Bronco, it's my uncle Larry's, he's out of town.

Detective) Where is it?

Woman) It's up there(points)Come on! Just tell me what's going on! what's with you today? you're so hyper? you're? you're all sweaty? you're wearing somebody else's suit! you sound paranoid!

Detective)
In my line of work you have to have a sharp accusatory mind. that kind of mind has to stay paranoid to stay effective.

Woman) But... You're a policeman. You're the one with power, you're in control. what do you have to be paranoid about?

Detective) All my 'power' is imaginary, based on the self centered habits of isolated individuals.

That's all produces this absence of civil resistance!

I have to be vigilant and anticipate ways to show that spontaneous resistance is impossible.

Woman) But... we have television, detective films, whole libraries of crime literature and editorial journalism.... all of them show a force of state at work which doesn't even exist!
We mutually project the state into existence through the force of these fictions.

Detective) yes, but the only thing the state can depend on is lack of resistence, passivity, that's all that stands between us and anarchy. For our sake I have to demonstrate the impossibility of doing possible things.

The Detective notices a newspaper headline and is stunned, he walks to a newspaper machine near an escalator and takes out a paper.
Woman) what is it?
Detective)I'll call you

Woman) What?, Where are you going? I want to go with you......(kicks escalator) god damn!
